First Discussion - What's an Anole?

Ok, if you don't know this, why are you taking this class? Let's just make sure. For 9/16, please read Chapters 1 and 2 of the Losos book. We will also discuss the placement of the group within the Squamata (including the history of the debate behind what family the anoles are in), so please do some reading to be prepared for that.

  1. Readings hint: I think it will probably be the most useful to read these two papers:
Frost et al. 2001. Total evidence, sequence alignment, evolution of polychrotid lizards, and a reclassification of iguania (Squamata: Iguania). American Museum Novitates No. 3343.
    and
Schulte et al. 2003. PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN IGUANIDAE INFERRED
USING MOLECULAR AND MORPHOLOGICAL DATA AND
A PHYLOGENETIC TAXONOMY OF IGUANIAN LIZARDS. Herpetologica 59:399-419.
